1998 Chevrolet Corvette Convertible
Indy Pace Car
Hard to miss, but equally hard to get used to, this ’98
Indy Pace Car was a real head-turner.
Chevy produced 1163 Pace Cars in ’98, all of them convertibles, and all
of them in the same color: Radar Purple Metallic. The purple was OK, and even the yellow wheels
and seats were acceptable, but the graphics were a little busy if I'm being honest - and I love gaudy cars!
It was still a 5th generation Vette though, and
that made it a very fast and fun car.
The top was manual, but pretty easy to operate. This car was an automatic, which I greatly
prefer on the Corvette to the 6-speed.
The car was a blast to cruise around in with the top down.
This car was a low mileage example, and as a result you would think it would have cost me a lot more than it did. However, at the time people didn't seem to be very fond of these Pace Car edition
Vettes. I guess it’s because they are so
oddly colored. Their loss is my gain I
suppose.
The colors actually grew on me. As a weekender, I think I would prefer the
Pace Car to a normal Vette. It has a
certain style, and it’s not like every other Corvette on the road.
This is me doing burn-outs in the UHCLC parking lot. You can’t get good smoke on blacktop. You
really need concrete.
