Mexico 2020: Coba

 Mexico 2020:

Coba

As part of a day trip from Playa, we visited Coba. Simplistically, Coba is just another group of Mayan ruins. The reason I added it to our itinerary and was so exited about going though is that it's the only temple you can actually climb....usually.

Sadly for us, however, COVID reared it's ugly "No Fun For You!" head once again and climbing wasn't allowed during our visit. Apparently people congregate at the top and the Mexican government, which controls all of these sites, shut down the activity.

It was still a fun visit. To get to the main temple you have to walk, ride a bike, or get a ride on a bike through the jungle. It had rained heavily on our day so it was a mess, but I had a blast riding through the muck on my trusty mount. I told our guide Joel that I was basically the 'Jungle Lance Armstrong'!

Kate was suffering a bit so she and Titus decided to hire a "taxi" to go in and out of the jungle.

There's more to the site than just the main temple. There are ball courts, roadways, and other structures that Joel covered with us at each stop. I was a little more interested in just playing around at this point in the day than getting the full history lesson, but Joel knows his stuff and made it fun.

It's a cool site. In spite of the weather and the very disappointing ban on climbing, it was a fun stop and felt more like an activity than just looking at ruins.

Climbing Coba would have been the cherry on the top of a fun day. To be fair though, it was sketchy looking and would have been tricky when it was dry. My sometimes accident prone wife might have met her doom scaling this thing in the wet.....and the husband is always the prime suspect.
