2003 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

2003 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

I get asked two questions quite often:  "What's your favorite car you've ever owned?" (I never can answer that one BTW) and "What's the fastest car you've ever owned?" For a time I would have answered the latter question with this Z06. It was a beast! If you could handle the harsher ride than a regular C5, this thing would flat out shock you with its acceleration - which felt like it was never going to end. It would keep climbing strong for as long as I was ever able to keep my foot down.

I bought this car in 2004 with about 8K miles on it and in like new condition. I've owned 13 Corvettes over the years but surprisingly this is the newest one to date. In fact, every Vette I've ever had has been a C4 or C5. I'm shocked by that as I look at C3s all the time and I always assumed I would have owned at least one newer car by now.

This car had been specially ordered as part of Chevrolets delivery program and had a custom Torch Red and Black interior which probably wasn't for everyone, but I liked it. It also had a few minor custom touches like a short-shift kit and different tail and marker lights. The previous owner had really taken great care of it. It even smelled new. Every C5 Z06 was a Hardtop. I remember thinking "How cool would a convertible Z06 be?" They finally make one today in the 7th generation.

2003 was the 50th Anniversary year for Corvette, so this was a 50th Anniversary Z06. I loved the color, and as much work as it was to drive, I loved taking it out. It really begged to be put on a track though. I never did it, but that's where these older Z06s would shine.

Should you buy one of these today? There's no question that this is going to be a collectible Vette in the future, if not already today. I don't think anyone disputes that and you're already going to pay a premium for a nice Z06. As is usually the case, low mileage unmolested cars are what you seek for long term appreciation. That said, even if you just want a cool go-fast car these tick all the boxes. They're durable so don't be too afraid of high mileage examples. You can get any part you need for them, NOS or aftermarket. They're versatile and fun...and fast! The only negative is that it's not a comfortable car on anything but the smoothest of roads. As long as you're okay with that dive right in while they're still relatively cheap.
